The presented image is the first image taken by the GOLD (Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk) spectrograph after the start of regular scientific observations. On it you can see the Earth in ultraviolet light.

The picture was taken on September 4 of this year at a wavelength of 135.6 nm, corresponding to the emission line of atomic oxygen in the earth's atmosphere. It occurs at an altitude of about 160 km due to the absorption of charged particles of the solar wind by oxygen. The colors of the image correspond to the brightness of the radiation — red to a stronger one, blue to a weaker one. At the top and bottom of the picture you can see the aurora, on the left - the daytime glow of the atmosphere. A prominent point at the western edge of the earth's disk is the star 66 Ophiuchus.

GOLD was built by the Laboratory of Atmospheric and Space Physics of the University of Colorado at Boulder. It is designed to collect data on the temperature, dynamics and composition of the upper layers of the earth’s atmosphere.

The tool is installed on board the SES-14 geostationary vehicle.It was launched earlier this year by the carrier Ariane-5. But because of the incorrect data entered into the rocket’s navigation system, the satellite was put into unplanned orbit. As a result, specialists had to perform a series of corrections in order to bring the SES-14 to a predetermined position. The satellite reached it only in June of this year.
