But the most likely explanation is the release of gas and dust from the surface of the object. It is the reaction force that arises as a result of this ejection, and is the cause of the small acceleration that occurs when Oumuamua is removed from the Sun. According to one version, ʻOumuamua is a degenerated comet that has lost almost all gas and dust reserves. Therefore, his coma and tail were too weak for earthly observatories to notice. According to another version, during the interstellar flight all the fine dust grains on the surface of ʻOumuam collapsed and only large particles remained. A cloud of such particles is quite difficult to detect during optical observations and its presence could well explain the change in the velocity of the object.

If ʻOumuamua is indeed a comet, it will greatly complicate the task of extrapolating its object trajectory and detecting the parent star.
